Background

Salmon has been farmed under the Scottish Sea Farms (SSF) name for over 20 years, but the company’s roots date back more than 50 years to 1969. Now with 58 farms around Scotland’s west coast and Northern Isles, the grower employs more than 680 people – the majority of them in remote coastal communities. Salmon farming is one of the most efficient ways to produce protein-rich food, requiring less feed per tonne of fish grown then most other livestock farming and having one of the lowest carbon footprints of all the food production sectors.

At their Barcaldine hatchery in Argyll, Scottish Sea Farms were looking to increase power supply in order to grow production in line with rising market demand. Their Distribution Network Operator submitted a quote of £456,000 for the work needed to reinforce the supply.

Keen to ensure best value, the company asked Envantage for a comparative quote.

Solution

Envantage agreed and our experts visited Barcaldine Hatchery to establish exactly what was needed and how best it could be provided. Following this review, we were able to offer Scottish Sea Farms a reduction of £400,000 – roughly 88% – on the original price quoted.

What’s next?

On the back of this initial collaboration, Scottish Sea Farms has since asked Envantage to carry out a feasibility study, looking at connecting 58 diesel powered marine barges to the electricity network. This involves assessing the costs, practicalities and timescales at each marine farm. As a result of this work, new supplies are now being investigated at several locations.

“Working with Envantage, Scottish Sea Farms were able to find £400,000 in savings on a single supply connection. We’re really happy with the way the team works and looking at a number of other projects to improve our energy use across the business.”
