Background
ESOS is a mandatory energy assessment and energy saving identification scheme for large undertakings and their corporate groups, expected to help reduce business energy costs by a total of £1.6 billion by 2030. Businesses are required to account for all energy use across buildings, industrial processes and transport. Silentnight Group is covered by the scheme because it employs more than 250 employees, manufacturing some of the most trusted sleep brands in the industry from their factories in Lancashire and Cumbria. The group also operates its own distribution fleet and garage, serving the needs of both of its manufacturing sites.
Solution & Outcome
With its team of Lead Assessors, certified to provide Energy and Transport Audits to ISO 50002 standard, Envantage was tasked with completing a reference year review of all of Silentnight’s UK operations. It was identified at the outset that energy audits of both
manufacturing sites as well as the transport division would be required to meet all obligations.
Recommendations included:
- Energy management improvements
- LED lighting
- Advanced space heating controls
- Compressed air system improvements
- Improved use of ovens
- Efficient extraction systems
- Use of variable speed drives throughout the factory
The surveys also incorporated reviews of the electricity supply requirements and opportunities for demand side management. Transport recommendation included driver training, improved aerodynamics, use of tyre pressure monitors, low resistance tyres and lower trailers.
Savings of £375,000 were identified, with a payback of under two years.
“I would like to thank all the team for your prompt and efficient actions which have enabled us to achieve our compliance before the deadline. I’m extremely impressed with the comprehensiveness of the reports and look forward to us implementing the changes to reduce our energy consumption for future years.”
