Invest in motor efficiency to slash running costs
Investment in energy efficient motors and drives is often of critical importance to reduce costs and energy use.
This is because the cost of operating an electrical motor over its lifetime is typically 10 times its initial capital cost.
A range of improvements have been made to the design and energy efficiency of such machines over the past decade, making substantial savings possible.
How Can You Save?
There are many available opportunities to improve your existing fleet of motors and drives.
Businesses should consider:
- Motor Policy – The development of a company-wide motor policy can help ensure that old, inefficient motors are replaced at the end of their life instead of being rewound (which further reduces their efficiency), and that all newly purchased motors are as energy efficient as possible.
- Variable Speed Drives (VSDs) – The installation of VSD controls on AC motors can realise significant energy and cost savings. VSD’s are extremely versatile, and offer a high degree of motor control where motor speeds can be accurately varied from 0% to 100% of the rated speed. The energy savings arise because variable speed drives obey the affinity law, which states that the relationship between the drive speed and energy consumption have a cuboid relationship. For example, a 20% reduction in motor speed will deliver a 48% reduction in energy consumption.
- Replace DC Drives with AC – AC drives are generally less expensive, smaller, lighter, and more rugged than their DC counterparts. In addition, AC drives are brushless, which removes the necessity for all of the maintenance procedures usually associated with DC drives. There have been significant improvements in AC motor technology in recent years.

Improve Efficiency with Envantage
Work with us to improve the energy efficiency of your motor fleet.
Envantage have extensive experience with the assessment of a company’s motors, and the potential savings that can be achieved through the installation of variable speed drives, replacement of DC with AC motors, and the development of motor policies.
We also offer ENMAT, a monitoring and targeting (M&T) system that can monitor the energy consumed by your motors and drives. Staff can use this information to track energy consumption and/or flow rates, and compare it to production figures or other metrics to monitor the performance of the equipment.
