RO and FIT compensation now open for electricity intensive industries

A scheme is now open to compensate electricity intensive industries for electricity charges related to the Renewables Obligation (RO) and Feed-In Tariff (FIT).

RO and FIT charges reflect the government’s commitment to meet legally binding carbon emission targets, and result in a cost to consumers via electricity bills. This increase in electricity prices risks reducing the international competitiveness of the UK’s electricity intensive businesses.

Eligible businesses can now submit a claim to receive RO and FIT compensation, which amounts to approximately 1p/kWh for eligible electricity consumption.

In order to claim the relief, businesses must manufacture a product in the UK within specific eligible sectors. An electricity intensity test must also be passed to show that the business is put at a competitive disadvantage by the RO and FIT charges.

Claims submitted before 31 March 2016 can benefit from backdated compensation.
