Founded over 185 years ago, Abraham Moon is one of the UK’s longest-established vertical woollen mills, producing premium cloth from natural fibres on a single historic site in Yorkshire since 1837.
Family-owned for six generations, the business is known for craftsmanship, design, integrity and a fully integrated manufacturing process, supported by trusted long-term partners. Supplying fashion and interiors brands worldwide through stock collections and bespoke developments, Abraham Moon combines deep textile expertise with a transparent, long-term approach to sustainability, balancing heritage manufacturing with the demands of a modern global market.
The company and the challenge
Compliance and Sustainability Manager, Katy Fisher, explained that the business was starting from a low base in terms of structured carbon management. “Data existed”, Katy said, “but the real difficulty lay with pulling it all together in a meaningful way. There was a real appetite to up our sustainability knowledge internally so we could really understand what was realistically achievable.”
People Director Claire Burns explained that Abraham Moon wanted a pathway that balanced integrity, commercial realism and genuine environmental impact. “We wanted quick wins that would make both an impact on the environment and the business,” she said, “but also a longer-term route to success.”
Partnering with Envantage: expertise that joins the dots
Envantage was recommended to Abraham Moon as a trusted energy and carbon consultancy partner. What began as support around Climate Change Agreements (CCA) and regulatory compliance quickly evolved into a joined-up programme covering carbon strategy, energy efficiency, procurement, and internal capability building.
From the outset, Envantage worked in partnership with Abraham Moon, helping the business understand what sustainability really meant in practice. Claire admits she approached the first carbon workshop with trepidation. “I must admit that I approached the first meeting with apprehension”, she said. “But the Envantage team explained it in such a way that I understood. I’m not an expert, but I understood it enough to help with the conversation and the decision-making.”
For Katy, the value lay in translating complexity into action. “We had all the puzzle pieces, but no idea how to put them together,” she explained. Envantage’s carbon roadmap brought structure and accountability, aligning senior leaders around a realistic, staged plan. Envantage’s Carbon Consultant, Harry Cann, said: “We structured the
workshops to be practical, engaging, and grounded in Abraham Moon’s own operations. There was a clear ‘syllabus’ of items to work through, and the team was incredibly engaged and willing to take up suggested changes and feedback to help align them with business goals.”
From strategy to tangible savings
Envantage’s expertise quickly delivered measurable outcomes. Taking over management of Abraham Moon’slimate Change Agreement in January 2024 revealed reporting issues that could have left the business exposed to significant financial penalties. “Genuinely, I don’t know what I’d do without Envantage,” Katy admitted. “Now, with Envantage managing the whole CCA process, we have complete total confidence that we are compliant.”
Entrusting the company’s CCA to Envantage, paid off. In Target Period 6 of the CCA, Abraham Moon achieved gross savings of £74,500 and net savings of £57,000. Beyond compliance, Envantage identified energy efficiency opportunities, including behavioural changes such as shutting down boilers at weekends and installing light sensors across the site.
Energy procurement was the next natural step. With energy bills proving increasingly complex, Envantage’s risk-managed procurement approach brought clarity, alignment of contracts and reduced exposure to volatile markets. “It wasn’t pushy”, Katy emphasised. “It was just, here’s our platform, here’s what we’ll do, and here’s the knowledge we bring. It was the next logical step in our journey.”
Building internal capability and credibility
Crucially, Envantage’s role extended beyond technical delivery. By upskilling the leadership team and engineering staff, the consultancy embedded sustainability literacy into the organisation.
“The knowledge I’ve now got compared to when I first started – I’d probably laugh at some of the questions I used to ask!” Katy reflected.
Claire highlights the cultural shift this enabled. “Originally, I was just interested in the social aspects of sustainability,” she admitted. “But we all really bought into the ethos, and it sparked genuine interest from an SLT perspective.”
This credibility now positions Abraham Moon ahead of many peers as customer audits become more stringent and frameworks like Higg Facility Environmental Module (FEM) place greater emphasis on energy and carbon data.
A trusted long-term partner
For Abraham Moon, Envantage has become more than a service provider; it is a trusted third-party expert that brings integrity, regulatory insight and commercial realism to sustainability. “Why would you not want a trusted third party who is constantly at the forefront of the issues that can keep us awake at night?” Katy asked. “We needed someone who lives, eats and breathes the complexities of energy and who can make fair assessments on the best options for us as a business. We have that in Envantage and as a result of our partnership, we are reaping commercial benefits while achieving our sustainability goals.”
Looking ahead, the focus is on stabilising gains, sharing credible sustainability data with customers and continuing the transition to greener energy procurement. Claire commented: “We are well-advanced in our journey with Envantage so the plan is to continue to work closely to manage our compliance and reporting, while working on buying our energy through Envantage’s team of experts. We’ve come so far and have so much to be proud of, I am excited to see where this partnership can take us as a business.”
By responding to Abraham Moon’s innovative approach to sustainability, Envantage has demonstrated the value of expert guidance that joins the dots between carbon strategy, regulatory compliance, operational efficiency and financial performance – helping a heritage manufacturer future-proof its business with confidence and
credibility.
