ESOS Phase 4: Why Early Action Matters

Published

The UK’s Energy Savings Opportunity Scheme (ESOS) is entering its fourth phase.

For large undertakings – those employing 250+ people or meeting the financial thresholds of an annual turnover exceeding £44 million and an annual balance sheet total exceeding £38 million – compliance is mandatory. But as businesses prepare, there’s a bigger opportunity to seize.

At Envantage, we’ve worked with clients through every phase of ESOS since the scheme began 10 years ago. One thing is clear: organisations that start ESOS earlier can gain significant benefits.

ESOS Timeline

5th March 2025 – Submit ESOS phase 3 Action Plan
5th December 2025– Submit progress update 1 on Action Plan
2026 – Get ready and start conducting Phase 4 audits.
5th December 2026 – Submit progress update 2 on Action Plan
31st December 2026 – Qualification Date
5th December 2027 – Deadline to complete phase 4 and submit notification
5th December 2028 – Submit ESOS Phase 4 Action Plan
5th December 2029 – Submit progress update 1 on Action Plan
5th December 2030 – Submit progress update 2 on Action Plan

Why starting early makes sense:

  • Unlock more value: Early compliance gives you time to identify and implement the most impactful projects, turning compliance into commercial gain.
  • Avoid the rush: Many businesses leave ESOS to the last minute, which creates a shortage of qualified Lead Assessors. The later you act, the harder it can be to secure one and the more expensive it often becomes
  • Strategic alignment: By embedding ESOS recommendations into your wider energy and net zero strategy, you create lasting value rather than short-term fixes.
