Government announces expansion of the BICS scheme

Published

Are you one of the 10,000 manufacturers set to benefit from BICS?

There is good news for manufacturers today, with plans to expand the scope of the BICS scheme – designed to provide relief on electricity costs – from 7,000 to 10,000 businesses.

While the scheme doesn’t commence until April 2027, relief will be backdated to April 2026 and provide a further financial boost for eligible manufacturers.

Unlike existing energy compensation schemes, BICS is broader in scope and reaches sectors that may not previously have received government compensation or exemptions.

The detail on eligibility criteria is still to come and Envantage will be scrutinising the detail and sharing insights via its BICS forum group.

The government has opened a further consultation, which closes on 14th May, providing a short window for businesses to respond and influence the final design.

Envantage clients will be assessed individually against the updated BICS scheme, but get in touch if you think your business will be affected.
