Radio Teleswitch Service (RTS) Shutdown

Published

From 30th June 2025, the Radio Teleswitch Service (RTS) will be shut off. After this date, RTS meters may lose some functionalities, potentially affecting heating, hot water, and energy billing. Ensure you’re prepared ahead of time.

What is RTS?

Introduced in the 1980s, RTS uses a radio signal to switch certain electricity meters between peak and off-peak rates. It has also been used in multi-rate meters to support customers who rely on electricity for heating and hot water, such as those using electric storage heaters, panel heaters, or immersion heaters.

How will this affect me?

If your RTS meter is not replaced before the shutdown, it may stop functioning correctly. This could mean:

  • Your meter won’t switch between peak and off-peak rates
  • Your heating and hot water may stop working as expected
  • Your energy bills could increase due to incorrect tariff application

Do I have an RTS meter?

Check for these signs:

  • A separate switch box near your meter labelled”Radio Teleswitch”
  • Electric heating or storage heaters in your property
  • No gas supply at your location (common in rural homes or high-rise flats)
  • Discounted electricity rates at certain times of the day, such as Economy 7, Economy 10, or Total Heat Total Control tariffs

What should I do next?

If you believe you have an RTS meter, it’s important to act now. Contact us or your electricity supplier as soon as possible to arrange a meter upgrade before the RTS service ends.

Don’t risk disruptions to your heating, hot water, or energy costs, take action today. For more information, please reach out to our team or your electricity supplier directly.
