Client Case Study

ESOS Phase 3

Why early ESOS action creates lasting results

Manufacturing

As a UK manufacturer with energy-intensive operations, this client is subject to compliance under the Energy Savings Opportunities Scheme (ESOS). Beginning in 2019, with a deadline of December 2023, the company had four years to comply with ESOS, as per government guidelines managed by the Environment Agency.

They worked with Envantage, leveraging our highly experienced ESOS engineering team to guide the process smoothly and efficiently. With a proactive mindset, they approached ESOS compliance early to gain a strategic advantage and unlock operational improvements.

ESOS

The challenge

Facing ESOS for the third time, and with the added requirement to provide an action plan in Phase 3, the manufacturer recognised the importance of starting early and took a proactive approach that would give them more time to review energy-saving opportunities. They prioritised the most impactful projects and started making savings sooner than in previous phases.

Beyond simply meeting regulatory requirements, the business aimed to turn compliance into commercial value. This meant navigating long-term planning challenges, managing internal resources, and overcoming external market pressures, such as contractor availability and fluctuating energy prices. Early action was key to building confidence in understanding regulatory changes, including new action plan requirements, and providing clarity and flexibility to make informed decisions and maximise benefits from the ESOS scheme.

Energy Savings Opportunity Scheme ESOS

The Solution

Envantage worked with the client throughout the ESOS Phase 3 process, auditing 12 industrial sites, completing them early, and providing clear, practical recommendations that were quickly implemented. It also laid the foundation to support the company in developing their action plans.

By staying ahead of deadlines and maintaining open, consistent communication, our experienced team helped the client confidently navigate the compliance process. We made sure key stakeholders across the organisation understood their obligations and had the clarity needed to plan effectively and realise the value from taking action early.

ESOS

Early completion of ESOS Phase 3 delivered both strategic and operational advantages:

  • £1.2 million in savings identified across more than 30 targeted energy efficiency initiatives, enabling focus on projects with measurable commercial and environmental returns.
  • Secured supplier capacity ahead of competitors, providing a first-mover advantage in implementing improvements during a period of high market demand.
  • Improved cross-functional collaboration, with better alignment across teams, clearer ownership of projects, and more effective communication of energy goals.
  • More streamlined planning and faster decision-making, driven by early access to insights and practical recommendations.
  • Stronger internal focus on sustainability, embedding energy efficiency into wider business strategy and delivery.
  • Trusted partnership with Envantage, with the team described as invaluable in navigating compliance and creating long-term value.
